How to embed animated files into your email

Ever wondered how to insert animation into your email? If so, you’re not alone. It’s a very common question I receive from our customers.

It’s also a good question because when done properly, animation helps engage your readers and often contributes to a snazzier design.

Often when designers think of animation though, they think of Flash files. Unfortunately though, Flash files and email clients don’t cooperate and they are often incompatible.

However, there is a simple work around for this problem and that is to use animated GIF images instead.

Animated GIF images can be uploaded to the file manager and inserted into your email like any normal image. More importantly though, they’re compatible with most email clients so there’s a better chance your subscribers will see the animation.

I’ve done compatibility testing of animated GIF’s in some popular email clients and you can see the results below:

✔ Hotmail
✔ Outlook 2000, 2002 & 2003
✔ Yahoo
✔ AOL
✔ Thunderbird
✔ Lotus Notes
✘ Outlook 2007, 2012 & 2013
✔ Gmail

The only email client where animated GIF’s won’t work is Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013. The good news is that these versions of Outlook do however capture and display the first frame of an animated GIF. So as long as the first frame of your GIF looks good, your email will still look fantastic – it just won’t be animated.
