Building a bio-economy
Queensland's fast growing biotechnology sector was on display at AusBiotech 2008, the premier biotechnology conference for the Asia Pacific region, held at the Melbourne Convention Centre on 26-29 October.
Queensland’s presence at the event was stronger than ever, with a large display and multiple functions to ensure the world knows just what Queensland has to offer in the biotechnology space.
Former Queensland Premier, the Honourable Peter Beattie was present at the event, flying the flag for Queensland. Mr Beattie has long been a champion for biotechnology in the State, and has carried this passion over into his new role as Trade Commissioner for the America’s. During his brief visit, Mr Beattie caught up on all the new developments in Queensland, particularly tropical health and new industrial biotechnology initiatives in the State’s northern regions, such as Cairns and Townsville.
As one of Queensland’s key industries, partnerships, collaborations and investments by international biotechnology companies remains a priority to underpin the development of this sector. As biotechnology is such a large and diverse sector, Invest Queensland has narrowed its focus to concentrate on strong, niche areas that will deliver long term competitive advantages. These focus sub-sectors include industrial biotechnology, medical diagnostics and devices and tropical medicine.
