Train to Retain resources available
The Train to Retain initiative calls on everyone in the training system to work together to help build safe, supportive and productive environments in which apprentices and trainees can learn and complete their training.
To support the initiative, the Department of Education, Training and the Arts has resources such as guides, posters and fact sheets available, and conducts information sessions in collaboration with Training Reference Groups.
A series of these sessions will be held at reference group meetings in Central Queensland in December. These will involve a range of stakeholders including employers, registered training organisations, Australian Apprenticeships Centres and group training organisations.
Resources produced by the Department assist businesses to ensure their workplace adequately supports and encourages apprentices and trainees to complete their training. Guides promoting best practice means of retaining apprentices have versions for both employers and apprentices.
The Train to Retain initiative is a key element of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan. The government believes encouraging and supporting individuals to complete their training should be a priority for Queensland employers and is critical in both addressing skills shortages and ensuring the State’s continued economic growth.
The schedule of Training Reference Group meetings in Central Queensland is as follows – Mackay: Tuesday, 2 December, 10-11.30am, Dept of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA), 1st Floor, Post Office Square, Cnr Sydney and Gordon Streets. Rockhampton: Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 10.30 am-noon, DETA, 2nd Floor, State Govt Building, 209 Bolsover Street.

Booklet has lessons from key projects
A new publication provides valuable insights into the change management work of Reframing the Future, the Commonwealth-State workforce development initiative.
The free publication — Insights from Strategic and Change Management Projects in Registered Training Organisations — provides snapshots of 11 of the organisation’s 30 projects undertaken in 2007. These took place in a range of public, private, community and enterprise providers from around Australia.
Author Dr Peter Smith is a recently retired senior academic and experienced researcher with an extensive understanding of VET organisations. Dr Smith analyses interviews with project conveners and draws a number of conclusions that provide insights into how Reframing the Future projects are assisting RTOs to develop capabilities to contribute to meeting the national priorities of workforce productivity and participation. The booklet can be downloaded from the website www.reframingthefuture.net or can be ordered in hard copy from the same site.

Handy guide to industry indicators
Each year the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) produces a summary of national VET indicators.
Released in October, the Vocational Education and Training Statistics Pocket Guide 2008 contains national data for 2007 and earlier years.
Among its many statistics are those showing how Queenslanders are seeking higher level qualifications in above-average numbers. Just over 63 per cent of all students in Queensland are at Certificate III level or higher – well above the national average of 49.9 per cent.
A key aim of the Queensland Skills Plan 2008 is to build Queenslanders’ professional skills to meet increasingly sophisticated workplace skill requirements. This data indicates this is being undertaken from a solid base.
The differing ways that data is collected by each state or territory reflects poorly on Queensland’s performance in relation to enrolment levels. Here students are counted only once, regardless of how many courses they take, whereas elsewhere they are counted multiple times.
The guide can be downloaded from the NCVER website.
