UWA WINS THE BATTLE OF THE UNIS!
Two early goals were enough to see UWA defeat Murdoch University in the Amateurs Soccer Pools Cup Final at Litis Stadium on Sunday 11 October.
Richard Barry and Ross Sheppard scored in the 9th and 12th minutes respectively to give their side a lead that an outclassed Murdoch side never looked like overcoming.
The game was played in front of a large and vocal crowd with both universities well represented by their supporters. Murdoch looked nervy from the beginning, giving the ball away cheaply in midfield and failing to deal with UWA keeper Tristan Scott's long kicks. It was one from such booming kick that UWA took the lead when Julien Noyer's poor defensive header went straight to Barry on the edge of the penalty area. Barry brought the ball under control before riding the attempted recovery challenge from Noyer and slotting the ball comfortably past Andrew Barrett.
Things went from bad to worse for the Murdoch defence in the 11th minute when Mark Kendall was penalised for a careless handball inside his own penalty area. UWA's top scorer Sheppard made no mistake with the spot kick, coolly side-footing the ball into the bottom corner.
As the clock ticked away, UWA coach Andy Dickinson replaced Georgiou with fan favourite Matt Hill in an effort to shore up his defence.
The move seemed to work with Murdoch failing to threaten again before the final whistle went, crowning UWA the 2009 Amateur Soccer Pools Cup champions.

UWA ENGINEERING STUDENTS TEST NEW PADDLE WHEEL
Six engineering students tested out their paddle wheel design on a Watersports Complex canoe.
As Michael said “Basically, we formed as a team for a university unit, the goal being to help improve the life of Cambodian's living on the largest lake in Cambodia called the Tonle Sap. So our group decided to improve their quality of life through their current modes of transport, designing a paddle wheel, intended to be made completely out of one of their main exports, bamboo. However in constructing the prototype, we used PVC pipe as a substitute. We tested it out at your facilities and it proved to be a huge success! That's the basic summary of our groups goal, and it proved to be a massive learning experience!”
We at UWA Sports were pleased to be able to assist. |
