Do you have any projects that students could help with this summer? Considering taking on an intern?
In 2009, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law internship program successfully placed interns with a range of local organisations including government departments, multinational corporations and local SMEs. We are currently interested in speaking with any organisation that would like some help over the summer break (December 2009 - February 2010).
Internship opportunities must involve work that is related to the intern's area of study, however all other aspects of the internship are flexible such as the duration, frequency of attendance and whether the placement is paid or unpaid. The University provides up to 30 days work experience insurance per annum for enrolled students undertaking voluntary or unpaid placements.
Interested? Contact us at internships@bel.uq.edu.au, or complete our expression of interest form and we will contact you.

School of Tourism forum links industry leaders
More than 100 of Queensland’s finest tourism minds considered the impact of the Global Financial Crisis on the industry at a forum this month. Organised by the UQ School of Tourism in partnership with Brisbane Marketing, the forum, “Economic Storm Riders – Turning Downturn into Opportunity”, heard corporate culture that embraced creativity and valued staff input was just one of the ways savvy operators were using the downturn to their advantage. School of Tourism Director of Industry Partnerships Dr David Solnet said the forum fostered the connection between academia and the coal-face of industry and was designed to keep the school top of mind among industry and government partners and representatives.

The event will be held on Thursday 3 December 2009 in Melbourne. Read news article courtesy of International Business Times

Intern Profile

Which areas of the program did you enjoy and were most relevant to your studies?
Part of my internship required me to undertake a competitor audit. I researched what Australian and overseas shopping centres, as well as airports and hotels offer in terms of concierge services. I then created a powerpoint with services not currently offered and came up with some recommendations on what Westfield Carindale could add to its services.
Although I had previously done a competitor audit for one of my assignments, this activity enabled me to research a practical case and apply what I learnt to a real life business situation.

As a result of the internship, Westfield has now offered Laura paid part-time work during the summer break.
