INTERNATIONAL SAILING PROGRAM LAUNCH
An international sailing program that was launched last week will give more West Australians the opportunity to become involved in one of Australia’s most popular sports.
UWA is pleased to announce the launch of the Western Australia International Sailing Program. This program is a collaboration between UWA and partners including the UWA Sport and Recreation Association, the West Australian Yachting Federation, The Royal Perth Yacht Club and the State Sailing Centre.
The program was launched by UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson, who had the honour of naming the University's Foundation 36 yacht UWA Centennial.
“The program will offer a huge range of benefits to students, staff and the wider community. There will be sailing opportunities for everyone ranging from social sport to match and fleet racing at a state and national level,” Professor Robson said.
“It will also provide opportunities for training pathways, coaches and officials as well as engineering project and event management skills for students.” |

UWA PADDLING CLUB TO BE ESTABLISHED
In 2010 a new sports program at UWA will begin. With the University located right next to the river makes sense to have the UWA Paddling Club for UWA students to call theirs.
The club would have a competition focus preparing paddlers for the range of community paddling races which are held each year with the aim of members to represent UWA at the Australian University Games.
The Western Australian National Talent Identification (NTID) program for sprint paddling will operate from the UWA Watersports Complex on Wednesday nights and their coach will be available to coach UWA Paddling Club members on that night. Current UWA students who are members of Australian paddling teams will also provide a support role.
The Paddling Club will run programs teaching members the paddling skills required to graduate to the sprint program coaching program.
All paddling equipment will be available at the new Paddling Club including a range of boats for learning paddling skills as well as elite racing craft.
It is proposed that the new club will operate on Wednesday nights starting with paddling skills development programs. Specialist coaching with the NTID coach will operate from 5–6 pm.
If you are interested in joining this new club, contact Nathan Johnston at 6448 1955 or via email nathanj@sport.uwa.edu.au |

THE GREAT RUN
In sunny conditions and on a new course the 2009 Great Run attracted plenty of interest to see which student would be declared the 2009 Champions. The new course saw runners make 2 laps of the paving around James Oval. The course provided spectators the opportunity to see the whole race unfold.
The women’s race was won by 2nd year Sport Science student Katrina Harris in a time of 3:59 followed by Emily Jasper (Medicine) 12 seconds behind and Tash (Ecoms) in 3rd place. Katrina had only been told about the race 1 hour prior to the start time thanks to a recruitment campaign by Ben Green in his lab.
The highly anticipated men’s Race saw a number of elite runners in the field. Sam Maxwell (Ecoms), Neil Berry (Ecoms), Ben Green (Sports Science), Kieran Chute (Law) and defending champion Thomas Bruins (Eng) all tipped to have a chance of winning. The field of ten was nearly reduced to 9 within the first 10 metres as Neil Berry fell to the ground. Neil quickly got back up and within seconds was back near the front. After the first lap Bruins had a handy lead which he failed to let go, he crossed the line in 2 mins 59 seconds with Maxwell finishing 2nd and Green in 3rd place.
Congratulations to Katrina and Tom for being the 2009 Great Run Champions! |
