Safe Work Australia Week

Every year in Queensland approximately 100 people die and 30,000 are seriously injured at work. Overall, total workplace incidents cost the Queensland economy over $5.2 billion each year.

Safe Work Australia Week (SWAW), 25 - 31 October 2009, is a national week which focuses attention on workplace safety issues. It aims to encourage all working Australians to get involved in, and concentrate on, safety in their workplace to reduce deaths, injuries and diseases.

Have your say on the proposed national OHS laws

Safe Work Australia (SWA) is currently developing national model occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation to be implemented in all Australian jurisdictions in 2011.

A draft of the model legislation is now available for public comment. This is an opportunity to actively participate and voice your opinion on the development of new model OHS legislation.

Whitsunday dive company fined $25,000 over stranding of overseas divers

A Whitsunday dive boat operator, AP Vessel Management Pty Ltd, has been fined $25,000 after two overseas visitors on a recreational diving trip were stranded at sea overnight in May 2008.

Concrete pumping compliance campaign

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland recently launched the 2009 concrete pumping compliance campaign to promote safe and healthy work practices within the industry.

The campaign, involving concrete pump owners and operators across the state has been developed in response to an increase in the quantity of concrete pumps and an increase in incidents, injuries and fatalities.

Inspectorates adopt international code of integrity

The Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), Private Sector Industrial Relations (PSIR) and Electrical Safety Office (ESO) inspectorates will soon reach a new international standard of service delivery with the adoption of the Global Code of Integrity for Labour Inspection.

The code serves as a foundation to establish credible, ethical and consistently professional behaviours expected of labour inspectorate employees worldwide.

The 2009 Visions Conference, hosted by the Safety Institute of Australia and supported by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, attracts health and safety professionals from around Queensland.

The forum showcases best practice in the health and safety industry and provides a platform to bring national health and safety issues to the forefront.
