UWA Ultimate began the year strongly, with the Monday night Social Sports competition and beginner nights uncovering some new talent lying hidden around the uni.

With 6 teams entered in Social Sports, it was good to see the competition begin to grow in size and standard, with 2 whole non-university teams entering. After taking out SUL 9, the addition of new players saw us go into SUL 10 with three solid teams entered, and with 2 of those reaching the semi finals, it was becoming evident that UWA was going to have a strong base for AUG on which to build.

Trials for Australian University Games began with around 35 people attending to try out, the most the club has ever had, due to hard advertising around UWA, on Facebook and at Wednesday night league. From this, a training squad of 25 was selected, and training began to see who would eventually make up the final squad of 16. On Tuesday 28th of July, the final team was announced, and UWA Ultimate is proud to present the players who will represent us at AUG 2009.

TSWA BASKETBALL

On Friday 7 August 2009 the Mixed Basketball Championships were competed at ECU Sports in Joondalup.

UWA’s mixed team dominated the competition throughout the day winning all of their round matches apart from their last against ECU. ECU’s mixed team finished top of the pool winning all of their matches to finish qualify for the Grand Final play –off. The Grand Final was taken out by UWA by 3 points in a hotly contested final match.

Congratulations to Matilda Taylor from UWA who received the ‘Rethinkdrink’ Female Best and Fairest award for the Mixed Basketball Championship Grand Final.

TSWA DODGEBALL

The inaugural TSWA Mixed Dodgeball Championships were contested on Friday 7 August at ECU Sports.

These Championships were competed between UWA, ECU, Notre Dame and Murdoch Universities. The event was played in great spirit and everyone enjoyed some close contests through out the competition.

The day finished with UWA and ECU finishing top two within the university pool and playing off in the Grand Final to conclude the day.

UWA came very close but ECU would eventually take out the introductory Championship.

UWA Sports was proudly represented by the UWA Dodgeball Club and would like to congratulate them on their success of finishing as the runners up Mixed Dodgeball team for 2009. UWA has no doubt these guys will go one better next year!

2009 Dutch Cycling Tour
Sarah Kent continued her busy schedule of racing in the Netherlands with another four races in 10 days at the end of July

2009 Junior Women’s Hockey World Cup
Kate Denning has been involved in the Jillaroos latest three matches at the Women's Junior World Cup in Boston, USA.

2009 World Gymnastic Championships
Janine Murray has been selected into the Gymnastics Australia squad for the up coming Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships to be held in Japan in September.

2009 Men’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers
Fergus Kavanagh all earned a call up for the Kookaburras matches following good form in national colours in July.

2009 World Rowing Championships – Poznan, Poland (23 – 30 August)
Emily Rose & Elizabeth Alderman (University of WA/WAIS) – Selected for Women’s Coxless Four.

HEADING TO THE GOLD COAST

Over 300 UWA students will be on the Gold Coast from 27 September – 2 October competing at the annual Australian University Games (AUG). 

UWA STREET FOURZ MINI WORLD CUP INDOOR SOCCER

The inaugural Street Fourz Mini World Cup Indoor Soccer Competition was held in August at UWA Sports.

The competition was played in Great Spirit and it was excellent to see a range of different countries represented by all the different students. 

The grand final was won by Jamaica against Saudi Arabia (1 – 0). UWA Sports would like to thank all of the students that competed in the event and the referee’s that kindly gave up their time to help out on the day. Without these guys, the day wouldn’t have been possible!

PRACONNECT 

Students from UWA School of Exercise, Health and Sport Science and Notre Dame Sport & Recreation Management have been working with TSWA & IRAUG staff during TSWA second semester sports and events.

Additional prac students will be taken on for the Indian Rim Asian University Games (IRAUG) in December 2009.

SOCIAL HOCKEY AT UWA SPORTS PARK

The 7 a side half field social hockey season kicks off at the Superturf on the week commencing 12 October. It is a nine week season.

Monday evenings - Mixed and family teams
Tuesday evenings - Womens social and competitive grades
Wednesday evenings - a mens Competitive Grade with 9 a side and full field
Thursday evening - men social and competitive grades
Friday evenings - juniors from Nines to all junior grades.
 
A quality competition for all players. Good umpires guaranteed. The bar will be open most nights.
