EVENING SOCIAL SPORTS
Evening Social Sports is a great way to play your favourite sport and keep in touch with friends at the same time. Or why not get a team of workmates together for a post-work destress activity? Team organisers get rewarded for their organisational skills with a free membership for the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre!
Last season saw the social sports machine reach a record high with 1,700 participants competing in 230 teams over 7 sports!
The new season kicks off in August and will run for 13 weeks. Nominations close 5pm Wednesday 15 July.
Umpires required for all sports. UWA Sports offers competitive rates and a great fun working environment!

SEND YOUR KIDS TO UNI DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS!
Uni Sport For Kids is a fun and exciting, multi-sport day camp, school holiday program for children aged between 5-12. Uni Sports For Kids exposes children to many different sports in a friendly, non-competitive environment.
With the focus on participation and having a good time, this program is excellent for introducing kids to new sports and for keeping them active and happy during the school holidays.

INTER-FACULTY & INTER-COLLEGE SPORT
This years Inter–Faculty sport has been well received by all the students, with each competition being played at the highest quality and in great spirit. The recent Inter–Faculty Basketball Championships were competed on the 13th May. The Men’s Grand Final was competed between Economics and Medicine with Economics running out 6 point victors. The Women’s Grand Final was a tight encounter with Economics stealing a two point win late on against a valiant SSEH.

Participants of Inter-College sport do a great job in organisation of their sporting competitions. The Women’s WISCA and Men’s NICHOLSON cups are currently both being lead by Trinity.

TERTIARY SPORT W.A. (TSWA)
UWA students have again been doing a great job in representing UWA all of Semester 1’s TSWA Competitions.
The Curtin VC Shield Hockey Championships were held on the 22nd of May at Perth Hockey Stadium. UWA Men’s team were defeated in the final 2-1 to finish Runner’s Up with UWA Women’s team being crowned Champions, beating Curtin 2-0 in the Grand Final.
UWA looks to have wrapped up another Overall TSWA title with four events still to be held. It has a commanding eighteen lead over second place and is looking forward to the approaching competitions in Semester 2. The current final standings for TSWA are:
1st – UWA (118) 2nd – ECU (99) 3rd – Curtin (87) 4th – Murdoch (73) 5th – Notre Dame (69) |

UWA JUNIOR CLAYCOURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
250 of Western Australia’s brightest and most talented juniors will be coming to the UWA Tennis Centre to participate in the annual UWA Junior Claycourt Championships from July 15 – 19.
The tournament carries Australian Ranking points and is part of the Optus Junior Tour. This is the first of a series of 6 tournaments held the at the UWA Tennis Centre culminating in the Optus Spring Nationals for 12’s and 14’s, the biggest junior tournament in Perth. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS COUNTRY WEEK
Country Week is back, and bigger than ever! After a smaller event last year, schools from the country are returning for the biggest event on record. 43 schools are coming with 3500 students to compete across a variety of sports, the bulk of which will be held at UWA Sports Park. |

2009 INDIAN RIM ASIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES LAUNCHED!
UWA Vice Chancellor Professor Alan Robson, WA Sport & Recreation Minister Terry Waldron and Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp officially launched the 2009 Games on 4 June at the UWA Watersports Complex.
130 invitees attended the launch to witness the unveiling of three major Games features:
1,200 students are expected to participate in the Games in December, the biggest international university sporting event ever hosted in Australia. |

UWA RUGBY MARKS 80th ANNIVERSARY
UWA Rugby celebrated 80 years of providing opportunities for players to wear the green gold and blue of the University of Western Australia on the rugby field.
Players from the 1940’s through to today enjoyed the tales of past players who went on to become playing legends Damian O’Donnell (still playing after 450 games) or onto great business leaders like Harold Clough. A feature was Bruce Hartley being recognized for his 50 years of involvement with the Club. Special club guests were asked to present their own “Team of their Decade” whilst stories of past glories flowed with the night. |

UWA KENDO CLUB
Achievements of UWA Kendo:
- WA won the open team event for the first time at the National Australian Kendo championship and 4 out of the five team members were from the UWA club
- Tani Hidetaka was the first WA kendo player to have become the Australian Individual Kendo Champion at the Nationals and he is a UWA club member
- The WA Kyu grade team (lower than dan grade) won the Kyu grade team event at the nationals and we hade one UWA member as part of that team
- Courtney Babb, a UWA member gained his 3rd dan at the nationals.
These nationals (held over the Easter week end) were the most successful ever for WA.
Also Susan Bonar (UWA member) was the only WA person to get into the National Australian team to compete in the World Kendo Championship in Brazil in August. |

UWA STUDENT WINS ENERFLEX STEP UP FOR MS
UWA’s Men’s Participants in the 2009 Step Up for MS Run won the Individual and Teams Category held last Sunday 7th June.
Neil Berry (Commerce) recorded an unbelievable time of 6:56 to convincingly win the race, 22 seconds faster than the 2nd place getter. Neil’s team mates all finished with in 1 minute 4 seconds of him finishing 5th, 10th & 18th. The boys were comfortable winners in the team’s category and for their efforts they each received a Digital Camera.

Bernadette Williams (Medicine) was UWA’s female representative and finished 3rd in her age group and was the 4th female across the line in 9:17. Not to be out done by the students, UWA Sports Fitness Centre staff member Christian Magaraggia gave the tower a crack and completed the 53 flights in a time of 9:31. |
