HazWastefund - Update

hazwaste

This update is to keep you informed of developments with the HazWaste Fund ('The Fund'). Current projects, waste reductions and new technology are just some of the things we’ll be covering on a regular basis.

What is it?
The Fund has been developed to achieve the Victorian Government’s aim to remove high hazard waste from landfill by 2020. Its focus is to help business to reduce hazardous waste* or hazard category.

The Fund supports projects that aim to:

  • reduce hazardous waste to landfill
  • reduce the hazard category of hazardous waste disposed to landfill
  • increase remediation of contaminated soil.

haz wasteIt will focus on:

  • infrastructure and implementation projects
  • research and development (R&D), and demonstration projects
  • knowledge and capacity-building projects.

Refer to the HazWaste Fund framework for more detail.

Applications

The Fund features a two-part application process. To find out more, please refer to our website, email: business.programs@epa.vic.gov.au, or call: (03) 9695 2722.

The next submission dates for Stage 1 applications are:

  • Manufacturing Waste - 9 Feb 09 -13 Feb 09
  • Contaminated Soils - 23 Feb 09 - 27 Feb 09

A number of projects have progressed to implementation stage:
  • PQ Australia, a leading manufacturer of hollow glass microspheres, is installing a system that will capture waste materials and reuse them within the manufacturing process. This will eliminate up to 95% of the company's total hazardous waste volume.

  • Geelong Galvanising trialed a new additive in their treatment process. Results showed waste disposal and steel production costs were reduced by 20- 30% per tonne. This knowledge may lead to broader application within the industry.

hazwaste expo

HazWaste Expo

The HazWaste Expo, held in November 08, provided a great opportunity for industry to connect with waste technology and waste solution providers. Over 300 people attended the event, including the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Innovation, the Hon. Gavin Jennings.

Feedback from both exhibitors and attendees has been very positive, with calls to establish the HazWaste Expo as an annual event. For an overview of the event, please refer to our website.

We look forward to showcasing the success stories arising from the Expo and The Fund, in future newsletters.

*‘hazardous waste’ refers to contaminated soil and waste from manufacturing processes (also known as ‘prescribed industrial waste’ or PIW).
